Why does my garage door start closing then go back up?

If the door reverses near or at the floor, the opener believes it hit something. Nine times out of ten in a Sapulpa garage the “something” is either the safety sensors near the floor or a travel limit that drifted. Both are homeowner-fixable. If the door reverses at the same mid-height spot every time, the problem is mechanical and lives in the tracks instead.

It reverses right at the floor

  • Look at the sensor lights. The two small boxes at ankle height on either side of the opening each have an LED. Both steady means aligned; one blinking or dark means blocked or knocked askew. A rake handle, a trash can wheel, or one bump from a car tire is enough. Loosen the wing nut, aim them at each other until both LEDs hold steady, retighten.
  • Wipe the lenses. Red-dirt dust and cobwebs do it here. October webs across a sensor eye are practically a season.
  • Check the floor itself. A new rubber mat, a snow shovel laid flat, gravel washed across the threshold after a gullywasher: the door only needs to touch something an inch early to call it an obstruction.
  • Sun angle, believe it or not. Low west sun straight into one sensor eye at closing time can blind it. If the door only balks on summer evenings, shade that sensor with its little hood or a scrap of cardboard and try again.

It stops partway down and holds

Mid-travel stops are resistance, not sensors. Run a flashlight up both tracks: you’re looking for a roller riding out of the curve, a track dented inward, or a hinge with a cracked leaf. Cold mornings add one more suspect, stiff dry rollers that bind in the radius. A shot of garage-door lube (not WD-40, which strips grease) on rollers and hinges is legitimate maintenance. Anything bent stays bent until someone with parts arrives; forcing it teaches the door to be crooked, and crooked doors graduate to the emergency page.

It won’t start down at all

The door sits open and ignores the button. Two quick checks before anyone drives out:

  1. Hold the wall button down until the door reaches the floor. Openers that suspect their sensors allow a forced close from the wall button only. If that works, it confirms a sensor issue; see the floor section above.
  2. Check whether the remote’s lock feature got toggled on the wall console. Kids and elbows both find that button.

If the door is stuck open at night and won’t force-close, don’t pull the release cord unless someone can control the door’s full weight: a springless or badly balanced door can drop hard. That caution and the storm-outage version of it are covered in the power-outage guide.

It closes, then pops back open a second later

Travel limits. The opener thinks the floor arrived early, touches down, reads the resistance as an obstruction, and retreats. Limits drift with the seasons as the door and rail expand; every opener has a pair of adjustment screws or a programming sequence for it, model-specific and in the manual. Set the down-limit so the seal just kisses the concrete. If limits won’t hold from week to week, the gear train or board is tired, and the opener page takes over.
